Overview of Need

The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) is seeking an experienced Independent Non-Executive Director to join its Board and provide strategic oversight across systems, data and technology as the organisation continues its digital transformation journey.

MCPS represents more than 42,000 music publishers, songwriters and composers, collecting and distributing royalties across physical media, streaming, broadcasting, synchronisation and digital platforms. With over a century of heritage within the music rights industry, MCPS is evolving its operating model to meet the demands of an increasingly digital and data-driven environment.

The successful Non-Executive Director will bring expertise in technology governance, systems strategy and data management, helping the Board navigate opportunities and risks associated with digital transformation, emerging technologies and the commercial use of data assets.

This is an opportunity to contribute at Board level within a respected organisation operating at the intersection of intellectual property, technology and the creative industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide independent challenge, governance and strategic oversight as a member of the MCPS Board.
  • Support the development and delivery of the organisation’s long-term strategy.
  • Provide expertise and insight on systems, technology, digital transformation and data governance.
  • Advise on systems integration, information security and the effective use of data as a strategic asset.
  • Support the Board in understanding technology-related opportunities, risks and future operating models.
  • Contribute to discussions around organisational resilience, governance and commercial development.
  • Attend Board meetings, committee meetings, the AGM and strategic events.
  • Act as an ambassador for MCPS and support strong relationships with members, stakeholders and industry partners.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be an experienced technology, digital or data leader with the ability to operate effectively at Board level.

They will demonstrate:

  • Senior executive and/or Non-Executive Director experience within technology, information, digital or data-led organisations.
  • Strong expertise in digital systems, technology strategy and data governance.
  • Experience overseeing complex systems integration and transformation programmes.
  • Understanding of data security, information management and commercial data opportunities.
  • Strong analytical capability and strategic thinking.
  • Ability to provide constructive challenge while maintaining a collaborative Board environment.
  • Excellent governance awareness and commercial judgement.

Experience within licensing, copyright, intellectual property or the music rights sector would be advantageous but is not essential.

Previous Non-Executive Director experience is welcomed; however, candidates with significant executive leadership experience and clear Board readiness will also be considered.

Time Commitment

Approximately 12 days per year, including:

  • Six Board meetings annually
  • Annual strategy day
  • Committee meetings
  • AGM
  • Annual Rightsholder Meeting
  • Stakeholder and industry events

Remuneration

£53,000 per annum

Location

Board meetings are primarily held in London, with additional events and stakeholder meetings throughout the year.
